Message from the Prime Minister on the occasion of International Women's Day 2025 "For all women and girls: rights, equality, and empowerment"
Today, we celebrate more than a symbolic day. We reaffirm a commitment, a promise, and a cause. For a world where gender equality is no longer a topic of debate, but a fundamental principle of our actions, laws and lives. Achieving gender equality concerns all of us and will benefit all of us.
The Government is working every day to advance gender equality and empower women. Major steps have been taken recently by the Government. We have decided to remove the mandatory reflection period for women seeking an abortion, prohibit virginity testing and certificates, and ban hymenoplasty. Just yesterday, we adopted the revision of the national action plan for gender equality. And before this summer, we plan to adopt a national action plan to fight gender-based violence.
This vision is not only for Luxembourg but for the whole world. We know that women, especially in times of conflict, are most exposed to violence and injustices. That is why the Government has recently adopted the second national action plan "Women, Peace and Security," – an essential step to ensure that women's voices are heard and their safety is guaranteed, even in the most difficult moments.
On this day, I pay tribute to all the women who are making invaluable contributions to our country's success: those who lead, those who teach, those who heal, those who create. You are proof that change is underway, and I will always stand by you. Let's keep going!
